Legend has it that in 1837, the notorious Marquis of Waterford, known for his love of a good time (and a bit of mischief), led a group of friends on a wild night of drinking through Melton Mowbray. Their high jinks included toppling over flowerpots, pulling off door knockers, and breaking windows. But the pièce de résistance? They literally painted the town red – a tollgate, several home doors, and even a hapless swan statue all received a crimson makeover. The Marquis and his merry friends later compensated the town for the damages, but their legendary escapade cemented the phrase "paint the town red" as a synonym for a night of unforgettable fun.
