Pain the Town Red Melton Mowbray Gifts & Souvenirs

Own a piece of history with our range Paint the Town Red gifts and souvenirs at Foxy Lots in Melton Mowbray. This town is famous not just famous for its delicious pork pies and Stilton cheese, but also for its legendary night that gave birth to the phrase "paint the town red!"

Legend has it that in 1837, the notorious Marquis of Waterford, known for his love of a good time (and a bit of mischief), led a group of friends on a wild night of drinking through Melton Mowbray. Their high jinks included toppling over flowerpots, pulling off door knockers, and breaking windows. But the pièce de résistance? They literally painted the town red – a tollgate, several home doors, and even a hapless swan statue all received a crimson makeover. The Marquis and his merry friends later compensated the town for the damages, but their legendary escapade cemented the phrase "paint the town red" as a synonym for a night of unforgettable fun.

As a local Melton Mowbray jewellery and gift shop, we are proud to stock a range of Paint the Town Red memorabilia. These charming souvenirs, feature the artwork of local artist, Claire Powell known as Squiggling Squirrels, capturing the town's legendary night. Choose from framed prints, placemats, coasters, and cushions. Browse through our collection to find the perfect keepsake for yourself or a gift.
